When updating a DM8700 firmware version from 6.2.1 or 6.2.0 to 6.2.5 or higher, please update to version to 6.2.3 first from the following URL. Then update the firmware to the higher version.

If the reader is accidentally updated directly to version 6.2.5 or higher the Feature keys will disappear, and the reader will become inoperable. Follow these steps to recover the function keys.

  1. Connect to the DM8700 Reader using the DataMan Setup Tool (DMST) application. If the DM8700 is connected by Ethernet and unable to assign IP, try to change PC’s network adapter IP for the Reader. Or use the following conversion accessories to enable a USB connection.
    • DM8700-USB-KIT
    • DMC-HH-USBA-02
  2. Go to the System tab and click the System Info button.
  3. Click the Save Certificate to File button to save a [serial number]_cert.pem file to the desktop.
  4. Contact TS.Global@cognex.com, attaching the saved pem file, and request a feature key recovery.
  5. Cognex Technical Support team will send a .json file in return.
Please be noticed that it may take about two working days for Technical Support to process your request and generate the file.
  6. When .json file is received, save it to the desktop.
  7. Open the DMST and connect to the DM8700. Go to the System tab and click Upload Feature Key and select the saved .json file on the desktop to apply it to the reader.
  8. The reader’s Feature keys should now be restored.

If a DataMan reader has been configured to be on the wrong network subnet, the DMST will not be able to detect and connect to the reader unless the PC system (DMST installed) is connected to the same subnet. There is no way to determine exactly what subnet a DM was configured to be on. If the DM’s subnet is not known, it will need to be factory reset.

To reset the DM back to factory defaults, do the following:

  1. Disconnect the power I/O cable from the DataMan.
  2. Hold down the trigger button while reconnect the power I/O cable.
  3. Continue to hold the trigger button until you see the status LED flash red and green alternately, and there will be a quick succession of beeps.

The device should now be factory reset.

NOTES:

  • A factory reset will force the camera to use DHCP for its network settings.
  • The above instructions only work on Dataman that have a physical trigger button and a removable power cable.

To upload a configuration from a backup (configuration) file to a DataMan reader, do the following:

  1. Disconnect from the camera intended to be restored. To ensure closure it may be easier to close out of the DataMan Setup Tool (DMST) application and restart the software.
  2. From the DMST’s homepage, go to the Restore section on the left-hand column by clicking on it.
  3. At the top of the screen there is a Configuration File section with a text box and another box to the far right with 3 dots. Click the 3 dots. Navigate to the location of the backup file to be uploaded to the camera. Highlight the file then click OK.
NOTE: It may be necessary to change the file type above the OK button if the desired backup file type does not show up.
  4. Highlight the reader or readers to be restored and click Restore on the lower right. A window will popup showing the progress.
  5. Once the file has been successfully uploaded to all the readers the "Cancel" will change to a "Close" status.
  6. Close out of the window. This concludes the restoration process, and the camera is now restored with the backup file.
