Vision-enabled barcode readers with the ease-of-use and cost of laser scanners
At any point of sale (POS), whether at a small grocery store or large retailer, customers expect a fast check out process with accurate pricing. It is also important for tobacco manufacturers and distributors to track and trace tobacco sales at this final stage of the supply chain. Retail scanners must be able to quickly and accurately scan codes at different orientations and angles to the reader as presented by the store worker. It must also be able to read codes under reflective plastic film and support different symbologies from pack to pack. Many current POS systems are laser scanners. While a very common technology, they are unable to read 2D codes and the combination of reflective plastic film and external light sources often create hotspots that confound laser scanners and cause no reads or mis-reads.
Cognex image-based barcode readers provide a fast and reliable alternative to laser-based point of sale systems. The DataMan 470 series barcode readers embedded in the POS systems deliver 99.9% read rates of a wide range of 1D and 2D symbologies, ensuring every tobacco product is accurately tracked all the way to the customer. DataMan 470 readers are equipped with High Dynamic Range Plus (HDR+) technology that, along with the integrated lighting, creates a more uniformed image and improves readability of difficult codes, including codes under reflective materials.
